For me, privacy and security are really important. We think about it in terms of both: You can’t have privacy without security - Lawrence Edward Page (Co-founder of Google)
Why Data Privacy is important?
When data falls into the wrong hands, it can harm people, businesses, and organizations.
It safeguards personal integrity, promotes trust in digital interactions, and upholds the fundamental rights of individuals.
In many ways, privacy is considered a fundamental human right, and data protection laws exist to guard that right.
Having your private data exposed, whether through a malicious cyberattack or simple error, can cause serious consequences.
It safeguards individuals from unauthorized access and protects against data theft.
Digital Personal Data Protection Act 2023
India passed a new law called the Digital Personal Data Protection Act (DPDP or DPDA) in August 2023. It took five years of discussions in parliament to finalize it. This law sets out rules for how companies and the government can collect and use personal information about Indian citizens. Its goal is to make sure that everyone knows how their data is being used and to make those using the data accountable. The government, companies, and civil society all talked together to make this law.
The focus of the DPDP act is on -
Data Collection and Purpose
Data Localization
Rights of Individuals
Obligations of Data Fiduciaries
Exemptions from Obligations
Regulatory Structure
This legislation is a crucial step in creating a strong framework to protect user data in India.
